angelabraehnbell@aol.comName: Annatar (aka Sauron)
Canon: Lord of the Rings
Appearance: Currently he is a fair-skinned Elf with black hair long enough to sit on and green eyes about one shade away from 'unreal'. He is 6'4" in modern standards, making him the same height as Galadriel herself. (And about 8" shorter than Numenorean Men of the time.) He dresses in well-made clothing of expensive materials, his wardrobe from home.

He enters the game around 3255 or so of the Second Age, having just surrendered to Ar-Pharazon the usurper-king of Numenor. He (Annatar) will claim to be on the side of the Elves and Numenoreans.
The only people who will have a chance to know who he is are those who have read The Silmarillion, published 1977.

Background:
Annatar
Annatar is the son of Aulendil (“devotee of Aulë”, one of his own aliases) and Finriel (“radiant hair/locks”). Born in Valinor during the Age of the Trees (some 2900 years before the sun and moon were made and the First Age began), making him among the second-born of Eldar, one generation removed from the first born who woke at Cuiviénen. Left Valinor for Middle-earth with Galadhon, father of Celeborn (who ultimately followed Fëanor). Continued to follow and became one of Galadriel and Celeborn’s people.
He is of the Noldor, and lived in Eregion since its founding in II 750, working with Celebrimbor and the other mirdain (jewel-smiths) until the Dark Lord Sauron destroyed the city after learning that Celebrimbor made three rings for the Elves. (II 1697)
Upon escaping, he made his way to Celeborn and Galadriel in Lórinand, which would eventually become Lórien. Annatar left them to fight with the Men of Númenor against Sauron, who wished to destroy them. He arrives in the village shortly after Sauron’s surrender/capture. Annatar's motivation might not have been entirely due to the long friendship of High King Gil-Galad with the Númenoreans, more because Sauron had destroyed his (Annatar's) old home and killed Celebrimbor (chief of the mirdain), using his body as a war-banner.
But in reality...
Sauron
He is of the ainur, specifically a maia of Aulë (the Vala concerned with the substance of Arda; rock and metal) and learned the craft of smithing (jewelsmithing) from him. His existence predates the First Age by thousands of years and he will have existed some 13,000 years by the time he arrives in the village.
He was seduced into the service of Melkor (Morgoth) and eventually given command of his second greatest fortress, Angband. When Melkor was captured by the Valar Sauron escaped and remained in Middle-earth, preparing Angband for Melkor’s return. During Melkor’s remaining time in Middle-earth, Sauron’s evil is only partly known. He chased the Elves from Finrod’s tower of Minas Tirith and took it for his own, renaming the isle it stood on Tol-in-Gaurhoth (Isle of the Werewolves.) He held this tower until Luthien came to rescue Beren. He fled into the east where he remained for around the first 1000 years after the final defeat of Morgoth, the beginning of the Second Age. At the end of this time he set out on a dual path, leaving behind his first tower of Barad-dûr. He spent six hundred years with the Elves of Eregion, teaching them things only a maia of Aulë could know. He showed Celebrimbor (chief mirdain, or jewel-smith) how to forge magic rings. Nine were made for Men and seven for Dwarves. In secret, Celebrimbor made three for the Elves. Sauron made the One Ring in the fires of Mt. Doom, intent to have power over all of the others. He also built up his forces in Mordor. The Elves found out and the three were sent away (and not worn, once it was found the One could control them.) Sauron captured Celebrimbor and tortured him in search of the three. Celebrimbor held strong and said nothing. His body was put up on a pole and used as a war banner when Sauron’s armies of Mordor emerged and sacked Eregion. The Elves called on Númenor for aid, and king Tar-Minastir routed Sauron, who fled back east and avoided the west until the Númenorean usurper Ar-Pharazôn saw the threat and gathered his forces to attack. (Around S.A. 3255) Sauron, knowing the Númenorean fleet was too strong for him, capitulated and went to Númenor as a prisoner.
Sauron can make himself look like whatever he wants to at this point though he will prefer his guise as an Elf—it amuses him, since he betrayed them. His magic is powerful but he has already made the Ring and so it is not as great as it once was, being locked into that creation.
Personality:
Annatar
He is arrogant and prideful, being a student of the Vala Aulë the smith. He’s incredibly skilled and gifted, also willing to share this gift, but he’s got a big head about it. He’s a hard teacher but the student will learn and learn well. Among the Elves he is beautiful, but no more so than many other Elves. He’s also proud of his heritage, being born in Valinor under the light of the two trees. He prefers not to talk about it but will get a dreamy look on his face (as though) remembering it. He is loyal and respectful to his superiors, though there are very few of them. He really has no idea why Galadriel dislikes and distrusts him so.
Sauron
He is as arrogant and self-confident as an immortal can be. He is greatly skilled, being taught by the Vala Aulë the smith and then Melkor/Morgoth. He is very proud of his appearance, able to change it at will—including into the form of a giant wolf/werewolf (the story of Beren and Luthien.) This makes him overconfident. Despite this pride, he does have a practical streak. He’ll give up and run away when he knows he can’t win. Or he’ll surrender to the Númenoreans for now and end up using their pride against them later. He detests the Men of Númenorean descent and desires to destroy them all. Other Men… jury still out. Make good slaves, probably.
This journal is for role-playing purposes only. I am not Sauron in any incarnation nor any actor who put on a suit of armor or did a voice in the movies. Tolkien's estate owns Sauron and that's fine with me. I am not Michael Praed, the actor in the icons, nor am I his agent, blah blah. Just using the images, mostly from the Robin of Sherwood years.
Clothing
Upon entering the village he still wears his ceremonial armour, which he wore when surrendering to the Numenorean king. He has no helm. He wears a breastplate and back--only slightly less decorated than the front--shoulder guards, upper and lower arm guards, elbows, and very finely articulated gloves. These arm pieces do not go around his arm, they are just on the outer arm and the back of his hand. He has leg pieces that extend up to the tops of his thighs--mithril chain mail skirting hangs from the front and back of his chestplate to cover the unarmoured area. He has knee pieces and shin guards. There is no armour on the tops of his boots.
The armour is mithril, thus thin, light, and very strong. It is edged in gold and has inset gems--adamant, ruby, emerald, and small white pearls. Deeply inset on the upper arms and breastplate are several pearls the size of grapes. (One per arm and three on breastplate.) These five pearls are black.
His smallclothes would be difficult to recognise as such--they are rather tight and made of white silk. They are about the length of bike shorts and can be unlaced down both sides as well as in front. His trousers are dark blue in a sturdy weave of hithlen (this is the cloth the cloaks from Lorien are made of. It will not make his trousers difficult to see.) His boots are finest black leather, socks white wool. His shirt is silk and even the padding on his armour is silk. His tunic sleeves match the garment, both a rich blue the colour of the summer sky. (Not pale sky blue, closer to royal but not.) The bottom of the tunic sticks out from under the chain skirting by a decent amount and the edging is covered with embroidery in darker blue, gold, and mithril thread. His cloak is silk velvet in a blood red so intense that, were it not for the sheen of the silk, it would look painted. The gold and jeweled clasp he made himself.
He wears his broadsword on his back, drawn with the right hand. The sheath is as finely made as everything else he wears. He will admit to making the gold and jeweled grip/pommel/crosspiece but not the blade. He did make it, but he won't say that. This is a full two-handed broadsword five feet long, though like Narsil it is lighter than it looks. His broadsword’s name is Reaver (Elvish unknown) but he will be calling it Twilight (undómë).
Vain much? He has no actual jewelery on his person. Not even One Ring.
His Jewels
(Found in his room)
Cloak pin: The design in the gold is very organic--leaves, with inset green stones of varying types making up some of the leaves. The largest was not a quarter-inch long, yet they were carved to have veining. Set against the blood-red of the cloak, they nearly glowed.
The rest were put into his room/materials case by the village. Some of these are not quite finished in some small way.
Three-colour tourmaline pendant (watermelon tourmaline) Mobius strip: The stone is about two inches long and carved into a perfectly smooth Mobius strip. It is held/surrounded by fine wire whorls in silver, gold, and mithril. This piece is finished.
Circlet: Mithril and sapphire (simplified version of the one on his user pic) to represent his connection to the divine (Eru Iluvatar) and open the mind to beauty and intuition. Promotes clarity and inspiration and steadies mood. Finished, this piece was made in Eregion with (possible) contribution by Celebrimbor.
Sapphire pendant the size of a robin's egg, capped with gold and leaves to make it resemble an exotic fruit--hung from appropriately heavy gold chain. [This would function somewhat like a locator beacon should he give it to someone--he'd have intuition to find it again. It might help also with where that person is going, not just where they currently are.] (Long associated with peace and happiness, and believed to help with communication, insight, intuition, inspiration, and prayer. The ancients believe that sapphires would help them in predicting the future.
Mithril ring with three stones (represented on his seal. This was made under the supervision of the Vala-smith Aule. He just wasn't in Aman when he made it.)
His seal: Gold set in silver, on a ribbon. He keeps it in a pouch or pocket, or with his jewels. He uses ultramarine blue wax most of the time. (Made with lapis blue). A cylinder about 15 mm long and in diameter, the symbol of a jeweled ring with three stones, one large and two smaller, all surrounded by acanthus leaves. Yes, he made it himself and it is incredibly detailed for something that small. [This ring is one that he has, not a magic ring, and the jewels do not represent the Silmarilli.]
Brown leather bracers: Forearm bracers, tooled and jeweled. Finished. No real power.
Leather belt: Jeweled. No real power.
Eating dagger: silver, will admit to making haft only. Goldwork and a few gems.
Moderately-sized uncut ruby: Carried out on the Blood Moon.
Moonstone pendant: Made for Vaisey, the Sheriff of Nottingham: Pendant is similar to the sapphire (above) but larger. The moonstone is easily twice the size of the sapphire, about an inch diameter. It is a slightly oval-shaped spheroid with a small cluster of leaves at the top. They are peach leaves, and each of the three is individual, not stamped, and in proportion to the stone. They look like perfect tiny leaves. The 'stem' allows the gold chain to go through it. It's sturdy enough and made to hold a pendant this size but not ostentatious--it shows off the pendant. It will have a glow to it. Not a light within, but a glow.
The magic is stronger on Vaisey than anyone else. He will have clearer thoughts on how to achieve his goals and be inspired in ways to achieve them. More things he needs than wants, but a bit of everything. It will help balance the emotions and keep the wearer 'receptive'. Annatar is unlikely to do any ride-alongs in the village--I would have to ask first.
Elven style knife: Made for Sir Guy of Gisborne under the theory that the more powerful the captain, the more powerful his lord. Guy requested a dagger so Annatar made him an Elven fighting knife. (Sting is one of these.) The blade is 16" long of finest steel, one-edged. Etched on it in tengwar script is Guy's name. (Sir Guy of Gisborne) There is magic keyed to Guy that will make it difficult for him to lose this knife and it will aid him in fighting. Also, anyone else who tries to use the knife will be hindered (dropping it, poor blows, cutting themselves.) The magic will dissipate on Sir Guy's death.
The true art of this piece is the grip. The hand guard is gold and silver tone and might seem odd-looking until a closer look. The tendrils, nine of them, curl back to protect the hand (a basket hilt, but only an umbrella's worth) and are made to look like the roots of trees. They are--there are two trees on either side of the grip: one is gold the other overlaid with mithril. Around them are mosaics made with 1 mm square pieces of jewel. These are tongue and grooved with each other and all clear jewels are over an opaque one, all opaque, under a completely clear gem. It's two layers. The gold tree's mosaic is warm colours, a natural setting in daylight. The sky is shades of blue and the sun is subtly rendered with rays beaming down to the tree, grass, flowers... The silvertone is a night scene. Exactly the same scene, under the moon in cold tones. Dark blues and purples, a diamond moon. They are the Two Trees.
Comes in a fine wooden box inset into black velvet.
